SOUND

When researching for our media product we realised that sound was an extremely important aspect to build the tension in a horror movie trailer. Most started with eery quieter music to set the genre and begin the trailer, then the sound built up with layers, getting louder and increasing the speed as the trailer gets scarier. We found that often the sound and footage would suddenly stop at the end of the trailer, the title of the film would appear and then an extra clip at the end that would aim to make the audience jump, because it was unexpected

We thought the sound in 'The Ward' 2010 movie trailer worked really well and wanted to base ours on something like it.

As our actor who played the old man can play the piano, and our location has a grand piano perfect for our genre, we thought it would be original to have the old man playing our soundtrack. We got him to play simple minor chords repeatedly, which we recorded separately on an iPhone and also filmed him playing this from different angles, that we included in our trailer's fast shots.

We have used the recording of the piano minor chords, as well as other sounds we recorded at the location, such as a ticking clock and a knife scraping on wood

We also used sound effects from iMovie which we thought would help build up layers and overall make the trailer more effective, and sound like a horror movie, and typical haunted house sounds. - a heartbeat and a vinyl crackling sound.
